iPod Shuffle

Because it's holidays and I am in lazy mode, I thought I'd do this post tonight.  Feel free to join in on your own blog or in the comments.

Instructions: Put your ipod or media player on Shuffle. The the first fifteen songs that play must be written down, with a short explanation of what it means to you (if anything)

Home by Michael Buble - I have no excuses for myself.  Judge me harshly

Because you Loved Me - Celine Dion - OK, I have no freaking idea why this is on my iPod.  None. I think someone is fucking with me.

Big Love - Fleetwood Mac - Because I lub Fleetwood Mac.  They got me through 1993

The Way You Make Me Feel - Michael Jackson - Am a bit of a bandwagon jumper. Jumped on that sucker when he died and got every song he'd ever sung.

Grace - Jeff Buckly - I got a little on myself in the great Tax Off Season of 1997 and thought I was going to be the next big script writer.  I listened to A LOT of Jeff Buckley.

Sunshine - Ricki-Lee - Let's face it, I could have quite easily lied and said this NEVER came on.  Even omitting this would be lying.  It is a catchy song "You had me hellooooo"  OK, continue to judge.

I'm Free - Kenny Loggins - Footloose.  I will defend this until I die.  Footloose and Kevin Bacon and I were meant to be married.

Heartbreak Warfare - John Mayer - Sure, he's a bit of a dick, but his voice is heavenly.

You're the World to Me - David Gray  - Probably my favourite artist. EVER.

Cherish - Madonna - My girlfriend Bronwyn and I used to dance around her living room pretty much every afternoon to the Like a Prayer Album.  Madonna had it goin on.

Begin - Ben Lee - Am a Ben Lee tragic.  One album I listen to from start to finish

Work - Kelly Rowland - I do believe I intended to exercise to this song.  Oh Yeah

Sunday Best - Washington - I only just got this CD yesterday.  And this song and this particular line "Holy Shit, you Sure can turn it on" makes me particularly happy.

No You Girls - Franz Ferdinand - Just a hot song

Mad World - Gary Jules - I don't have a story.  I just think it's a vividly beautiful song.

I've put the songs below in case you're unfamiliar with them.

Go on, I've shown you mine, show me yours..

My iPod is MIA since either Xmas Day or Boxing Day (I don't even want to think that someone who's been a guest at my house has pinged off with it, but I'm coming to that conclusion), I'll be brutally honest and do my own random shuffle using songs I can remember being played on Xmas Day.
    1. Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes - Edison Lighthouse - just makes me feel oh so happy. Memories of sitting at the kitchen table as a kid listening to 4BH.
    2. Rock'n'Roll All Night- KISS - oh yeah, the inner rock child in me comes out.
    3. Mmm Bop - Hanson - how can you not want to bop along to this song? Another "happy all over" kinda song.
    4. Boys from the Bush - Lee Kernaghan - reminds me of the B & S Ball 1992 in Charters Towers & Cloncurry ... yee ha!
    5. At Last - Etta James - such a sexy song to dance with your man.
    6. Bing Bang (Time to Dance) - Lazy Town theme song - hey, have you checked out Sporticus' muscles & moves? Dang hot!
    7. Welcome to Paradise - Green Day - my favourite band in the world singing it loud.
    8. Tubthumping - Chumbawamba - did I really like this song? It reminds me of Irish pubs.
    9. I Can Hear Music - The Beach Boys - I want this song played at my funeral. Those harmonies will send me to heaven.
    10. Doin' the Do - Betty Boo - I could be seen bustin some moves to this little number at some night clubs in 1990.
    11. Evening Rose - The Gingers - the kind of song I'd want to sing if I were in a girl band. These chicks from Melbourne are great!
    12. All Over You - Live - I'd mess with the scheduled play list and play this song whilst doing a mid-dawn announcing shift to wake me up.
    13. A Little Less Conversation - Elvis vs JXL - if I could dance, I'd dance to this.
    14. Let Me Entertain You - Robbie Williams - you sure could entertain me, Mr Williams ;-)
    15. Join in the Chorus - North Melbourne FC club song, sung to "A Wee Doch & Doris" - kids are true footy fans.

A few embarrassing ones here ... if only I could have shuffled for real. Where are you iPod Classic???

    1. Taking Back Sunday- Up Against
My now fiance introduced me to this band when we first started dating, and the album holds a special place in my heart.

    2. Them Crooked Vultures- No One Loves Me And Neither Do I
TCV features Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age and Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters. I love both of those bands, so this one was a bit of a no-brainer. My fave song on the album.

    3. Everclear- Local God
From the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack. I love that movie oh so much, and I randomly downloaded the soundtrack one afternoon and reignited my love for Everclear.

    4. The Offspring- Genocide
Off the album Smash. Reminds me of my teenage years, being all rebellious. Smash also features Self Esteem, and the fave for hardcore little teens, Bad Habit.

    5. City and Colour- The Girl
Ahhhh. This song reminds me of my fiance and makes me smile everytime I hear it. City and Colour is Dallas Green, singer from Alexisonfire, and he sings the most beautiful acoustic songs.

    6. Philadelphia Grand Jury- 99 Problems
A hilarious version of the classic Jay Z song, I challenge anyone to stay in a bad mood while listening to this.

    7. Linkin Park- Numb
Not the biggest fan of LP, but was working at a fan summit for them so thought I should actually know some of their songs.

    8. Thrice- Image of the Invisible
Another band I discovered via the fiance. I love the way this song builds and swells. A good song to yell along to in the car. Not so great to yell to on the train. Scares people.

    9. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes- Elenore
A punk rock version of the 60's song by half of NoFX. I love the original song, and this one, like all of the Gimme Gimme's catalogue, is fun!

    10. Foo Fighters- The Pretender
I love the Fooeys. All of their songs. Just a fun band that makes a perfect soundtrack to a boozy summer BBQ.

    11. Imelda May- Big Bad Handsome Man
A rockabilly chick from London who has a gorgeous throaty voice and makes you swagger a bit when you walk.

    12. Florence and the Machine- Dog Days Are Over
I love, love, LOVE Florence and the Machine. I heard this on Triple J one morning and fell in love immediately. Luckily, I worked in the music department at JB Hifi and blasted this album EVERY day, much to the staff's chagrin.

    13. Sia- Clap Your Hands
She's a crazy girl, this one. This song is another fun one to bring the mood up if I'm feeling a little low.

    14. The Presets- My People
I'm here with all of my people NAH NAH NAHHH. I saw them live in the Boiler Room at the Big Day Out in Sydney when their album Beams first came out. It was my first experience of being high without taking any drugs. Just an amazing feeling.

    15. Jace Everett- Bad Things
The theme to True Blood. Nuff said.

Great, eclectic mix there Bern. I love hearing about what music other people listen to... kind of an insight into their soul in a way. And some good suggestions too. Think I'll be borrowing some of yours to add to my mix ;-)

    Fifteen you say? Randomly?

    Here are mine:

    1. Africa - Toto - well I could say it's because my husband's from Africa, or it's just one helluva catchy ditty, but the main reason is I'm smug about figuring out the damn lyrics "I've blessed the rains down in Africaaaa" (not that I know WTF it means, just what the lyrics *are*)

    2. All This Beauty- The Weepies. Just a smiley, shiny, happy song. (From SATC soundtrack). Miss 2 calls it 'Tinkerbell music'

    3. Breathe Me - Sia. One of her best songs IMO. A fabulous voice too. (used in final ep of 6 feet under)

    4. Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol - heard it too many times, reminds me of Grey's Anatomy, potential earworm hazard, still like it though.

    5. Coming Around Again - Carly Simon. This song makes me cry. Every time. (from Heartburn soundtrack. Just starting to realise there's a pattern here with soundtracks.hmmm)

    6. Love Song - Sara Bareilles (from Private Practice ads. Another soundtrack. WTF?? I'm so unoriginal). But another great feelgood track from a woman with a fine voice.

    7. Marlene on the Wall - Suzanne Vega. Respec'.
Love the lyric 'but the only soldier now is me/ I'm fighting things I cannot see/ I think it's called my destiny that I am changing' - that meant the world to me on my great OS adventure in my 20s

    8. Walking on a Dream - Empire of the Sun. Those David Bowie-esque Labyrinth-style 70s tricksters from the noughties. Every song sounds the same. But this is the best one.

    9. (really? Still 6 to go?) Everybody's Talkin - Crowded House version (from Triple J's Like A Version) can't remember who sang the original but it's from many a car ad.

    10. The Blower's Daughter - Damien Rice. The melancholy man with the beautiful voice. Not for exercising with (unless you want to go into a coma or start going backwards)

    11. Every You Every Me - Placebo . Emos with musical substance. Saw them at Brixton Academy in the early noughties. They have a massive French fanbase due to the fact that they speak French onstage sometimes. I went with a crazy French aquaintance called Benedicte.

    12. You Bloody Mother Fuckin Asshole - Martha Wainwright- I'm new to Martha. She's deep, and real. Good song when you're pissed off with your current (or ex) man.

    13. Forever Song - Josh Pyke. Love the Pyke-ster. So so cute.

    14. Jack Johnson - Banana Pancakes. Smooth grooves.

    15. Florence and the Machine - track 17 (don't know the name) but love her work nevertheless. Love every single song. Go Florence you good thing. She's got heart.

Blogging mine on Tuesday but oh boy there are some interesting ones in my list!

    Being Me said...

    1. 'Satellite' - Santana Feat. Jorge Moreno = I have absolutely no desire to listen to this song and have no idea where it came from.

    2. 'In the wee small hours of the morning' - Carly Simon = that's more like it.

    3. 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic' - The Police = this one always takes me back to the '84 Olympics and the snippets of the Gymnastics they used to play with this as the score.

    4. 'Eleanor Rigby' - Katie Noonan = inspired version of this song.

    5. 'Laura' - Scissor Sisters = what 4yo can keep from doing a silly slow march-dance to this when they hear it?

    6. 'Suzy-Hang-Around' - ABBA = 'Suzy was nine and I was ten...' Yawn. Not the greatest ABBA song.

    7. 'Love In The 1st Degree' - Bananarama = Oh God. My guilty pleasure reared its ugly head. And when I say ugly, I'll leave it to you to decide if I meant the tall one.

    8. 'Alphabetical' - Phoenix = Has to be one of my top favourite bands. They can do no wrong.

    9. 'Zoom' - Lionel Ritchie = Oh. Heh heh... how did that get in my iTunes folder? I'm sure I don't know, sir.... *cough*

    10. 'Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe' - Ella Fitzgerald = not my favourite EF song. But her voice is great to have in the background no matter what she's singing.

    11. 'Bottle It Up' - Sara Barielles = "you're shit out of your luck", love that line.

    12. 'Who Needs Ya' - Steppenwolf = Huh? Must be the husband's (and that Lionel Richie one too... yeah). I thought all they sang was Magic Carpet Ride.

    13. 'When Doves Cry' - Prince = oh yeahhh, now we're talking. Is it still cool to like Prince?

    14. 'Born Again' - Badly Drawn Boy. Again, I love him. He can do no wrong either. So there. :P

    15. 'Six Little Ducks' - Play School. Oh. The synthesized "widdle-waddle" bits in this are masterful. I particularly love their use of layered "quack" backing vocals. Superb use of Dolby.

Freaky. We have such similarly embarassing music tastes. I am going to do up a post on this when I get back. And Kenny Loggins will feature.
